Conditions Report: Feb 13 – Arctic Breakdown
The cracks in the Arctic Ridge system we’ve been in the last several days are starting to show and that’s good news because there’s still a lot of snow to be had out there. While there isn’t a ton of fresh in the forecast, the full reset of early last week is still lingering in many honey holes. The snow quality is quite good and some warmer temps to go play will be more than welcome. Avalanche conditions continue to be moderate, the trails are groomed and it’s a good time to come out. If you’re headed to Silent, the road in is pretty rough.

Riley Suhan Backcountry Race
On April 5, 2025 the Golden Snowmobile Club will once again host the Riley Suhan Backcountry Race, one of the best events in all of snowmobiling! This unique mountain race traverses a large loop of the Quartz Creek riding zone in Golden BC and is executed in a timed, relay format. For 2025, on top of the normal race that combines the times of a randomly chosen, 4 person team, we will have an additional pro-level race with a special prize purse on a more challenging course. We’re sorting out the details of this pro race but be assured that the idea is for it to be awesome for both spectators and participants alike. Entry to the second pro race will require some sort of qualifying that we will determine before the event; it may likely be the top 10-20 times of the first lap are invited to try the second, more challenging lap, for a separate prize purse. We will announce the specifics as we iron them out.

Snow & Weather
SNOW AND WEATHER
The past week has been mostly cold and clear with no new snow. The temps have been painfully cold but the sky has been clear. Those who did get out were rewarded with incredible views and good snow. A lot of that snow is still around so it’s a good time to make your way out here. Looks like temps will be trending warmer and hopefully that kicks off the snow again sometime soon.

“Wind slabs may be reactive to human triggering in the alpine. Assess snowpack conditions as you travel through the terrain.” – Feb 13
Travel and Terrain Advice from Feb 13:
- Carefully evaluate steep lines for wind slabs.
- Use caution above cliffs and terrain traps where even small avalanches may have severe consequences.
- Be aware of the potential for loose avalanches in steep terrain where snow hasn’t formed a slab.
