March 23, 2017 Golden BC Snowmobile Conditions

Snowmobile conditions in Golden BC are still really good. This is the time of year when our areas shine because of higher elevations and colder temps keeping the snow quality high.

Snow Beta

This week we experienced  some incredibly volatile weather. It was warm last weekend and many avalanches occurred. Since then we’ve continued to get a few overnight snowfalls and the riding is quite good. There has been wind in the alpine and the snow feels like it’s compacted.

Avalanche.ca Purcell mountain report on March 24, 2017

Probably one of the most concentrated cycles of destructive avalanches flushed through the Dogtooth Range since our last report. The majority of the events happened during a time of heavy snowfall and warm temperatures. It’s been humbling to be in the mountains this week and see how wild thing got out there. The cornices remain huge this year and will continue to be a major safety concern moving through the spring.

Weather

Another 48 cms in the forecast! This winter just keeps on giving.  Cool temps and a bit of sun also make this look like another incredible week coming up.

Riding Areas

Colder temps have been keep the trails in in pretty good shape. When it warms, they get bumpy fast.

Quartz Creek

Conditions:  Powder and packed powder.
Grooms scheduled: Thursday, Saturday, Sunday evenings (Fridays and Wednesdays, if needed).
Fees: Everyday  ($25/rider).
Parking:  Parking lot will be  cleared as needed. Lots of room for enclosed trailers. Portable toilets in parking lots. Pretty muddy in the parking lot due to melt freeze.
Propane and firewood have both been restocked in upper cabin.  Please use conservatively.

Gorman Lake

Conditions:   Powder, windswept powder. Crusty  till about half way up the groomed trail.
Grooms scheduled:  Friday – pending due to equipment failure. Day by day basis right now for Gorman grooming. Watch out for the broken groomer around km 6 on the road.
Fees:  Everyday ($25/rider).
Parking:  3.5km lower lot. There’s plenty room for enclosed trailers. It’s pretty mucky in the lot this week. Your running shoes will hate you so put some boots on.
Road:    Expect the road to be muddy mess in the evening.  The Dogtooth FSR  is a steep, winding, mountain road with big exposure off the sides. By the time you realize you’re going too fast, it’s too late. The smart driver pops it in the 1st gear and lets their engine do the breaking on the way down.  We’ve had 3 trucks off the road on the  Dogtooth FSR (Gorman Lake access) this year.

Silent Pass

Conditions:  Powder. Wind swept in the alpine. Icy down low.
Grooms scheduled:  Thursdays (Saturdays if required)
Fees:  Everyday ($25/rider).
Parking:  Parking is about 100m  after the McMurdo turn off at 46.5km. Try not to box anyone in.  NO PARKING on the main road on weekdays please.
Road:  Lower road is sanded by logging interests Monday-Friday. The road is mostly melted out. Can be muddy.

Please watch our road safety video.

West Bench Trail

Conditions:    A little bumpy but still good to go. Get out there and ride the trail before it melts out. It was great on Wednesday.
Grooms scheduled:  No grooms planned
Fees:  Everyday ($25/rider) payable at Gorman or Quartz trailhead.
Parking:  Park at Gorman or Quartz parking lot.
